In the heart of the Scottish Borders, an extraordinary friendship has blossomed between two remarkable children—Scarlett from Galashiels and Tommy from Earlston. Though their lives have been shaped by complex medical challenges, their spirits shine brightly, bound together by laughter, love, and an unspoken understanding that few can truly comprehend.
Scarlett, 9, is a firecracker of personality. With her trademark sass, cheeky grin, and fierce determination, she lights up every room she enters. Whether she’s enjoying Yakka Dee, splashing in swimming pools (just as long as it is nice and cosy!), or heading to the park, Scarlett lives life with boldness and a sparkle in her eye. She’s non-verbal, but don’t be fooled—her side-eye speaks volumes, and her presence is loud and clear.
Tommy, 7, is her perfect partner-in-crime. Being equally tenacious and cheeky, a lover of tickles, and all things silly (especially fart noises), Tommy’s laughter is infectious. Mischievous and full of charm, he’s rarely seen without a grin, especially when he is doing the things he loves, like swimming (unlike Scarlett, any body of water will do for this lad!). Like Scarlett, Tommy is non-verbal, but his joy is unmistakable—his smile is his superpower.
Both children have overcome incredible odds. Scarlett was deprived of oxygen at birth, resulting in a brain injury and a diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy, and Cerebral Visual Impairment. Tommy survived Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome, losing his identical twin brother, Joe, and sustaining a severe brain injury. He, too, lives with Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy, and CVI. Both are PEG fed and require around-the-clock support. And yet—despite everything—they are full of life, love, and laughter.
Their bond is something truly special. Scarlett and Tommy don’t need words to communicate; their connection runs deeper. Whether they’re side-by-side in the park, or sharing a knowing look, their friendship is a beautiful reminder that love and joy are limitless—and sometimes, the most meaningful conversations don’t require a single spoken word.
In a world that often focuses on limitations, Scarlett and Tommy are shining examples of resilience, courage, and the power of true friendship. Together, they remind us all what it means to live fully, love fiercely, and laugh often.
They are more than best friends—they are an amazing duo. And the world is brighter because of them.
